Mining rehabilitation is a critical process that involves restoring mining sites to their natural state or repurposing them for other beneficial uses once mining operations have ceased. It’s an essential part of responsible mining practice and environmental stewardship.

In this article, we’ll outline the key components of a mine rehabilitation service and explain why partnering with Erizon is the best choice for ensuring your project’s success.

What Is Mine Rehabilitation?

A mine rehabilitation service is a specialised service offered by professional companies like Erizon, designed to rehabilitate and restore disturbed mining sites. It encompasses a range of activities from assessing the environmental impacts, remediation of disturbed areas, managing soil and water, and reclamation of vegetation and wildlife habitats, to ongoing monitoring and maintenance activities.

The Need For Rehabilitating Mine Sites

Rehabilitating mine sites is crucial for restoring the environment after an area has been mined. Mining activities can cause a range of environmental impacts, such as pollution of water and air, disruption or destruction of wildlife habitats, soil erosion, and other negative outcomes.

Below are several other compelling reasons that highlight the significance of mine site rehabilitation:

Environmental Impacts Of Mining Activities: Mining activities can cause huge environmental damage ranging from air and water pollution to destruction of wildlife habitats, deforestation, and land degradation. Rehabilitating mine sites is necessary to mitigate these impacts.

Legal And Regulatory Requirements Mining Operations: Many countries including Australia have strict regulations which require mining companies to undertake rehabilitation work on mine sites. This includes the completion of soil restoration, implementation of water quality management plans, development of biodiversity corridors, and other activities that are designed to help return the land to its natural state.

Social And Economic Benefits: Rehabilitating mine sites can have multiple social and economic benefits. These include creating jobs in the local area, improving access to clean water and air, reducing soil erosion, providing protection for wildlife habitats, and helping to restore biodiversity. Additionally, rehabilitating mine sites can help to boost the reputation of mining companies by showing that they are taking steps to reduce their environmental footprint.

Different Types Of Mine Rehabilitation Services

Mine rehabilitation services can range from land remediation, reclamation, and restoration to habitat enhancement and species conservation.

Erizon specialises in providing rehabilitation services including:

Revegetation

Revegetation helps to restore the land affected by mining activities. Our team of experts works closely with clients to plan and develop effective revegetation programs following their specific needs.

Our range of products includes a variety of solutions including hydromulching, hydroseeding, and soil stabilisation to ensure quick and successful site restoration.

Erosion Control

Erosion control is an important part of mine rehabilitation as it helps prevent soil from eroding and being washed away by natural elements such as wind and rain.

Erizon’s EcoArmour solution is designed to withstand Australia’s harshest climates. Compared to conventional erosion control blankets such as geo-fabric, our erosion control solutions are safer to apply and are proven to be more effective and cost-effective, as they can last up to 20+ years.

Dust Suppression

Dust suppression in mine site rehabilitation aims to reduce air pollution and improve public health by reducing the emission of dust particles that are released when mining activities take place.

Even after mine closure, the presence of tailings dams and ash dams continues to pose a significant dust risk to the local communities and wildlife. While mitigating immediate dust concerns, implementing a sustainable long-term revegetation plan is crucial. The utilisation of polymer dust suppressants like HydroBond help to address this issue effectively.

Key Components Of A Successful Mine Rehabilitation Service

Successful mine rehabilitation services should include a range of solutions that focus on restoring the land to its natural condition.

Here are some components that make up a successful mine rehabilitation service:

  • Environmental Impact Assessment – This involves assessing the potential environmental impacts of mine rehabilitation activities on air, water, soil, biodiversity, and socio-economic factors.
  • Remediation And Restoration Of Disturbed Areas – A successful mine rehabilitation service includes the identification and removal of hazardous materials from the environment.
  • Soil And Water Management – A successful mine rehabilitation service must safeguard groundwater from mining-induced contamination. This may entail managing runoff, monitoring water levels, and implementing leachate collection and treatment systems.
  • Reclamation Of Vegetation And Wildlife Habitats – The process should restore and rehabilitate natural plant communities and habitats affected by mining activities. It should involve reintroducing native plant species and creating suitable habitats for wildlife.
  • Monitoring And Maintenance Activities – Ongoing monitoring and maintenance are crucial for successful mine rehabilitation. This includes periodic inspections, testing of the reclamation system, and erosion control measures to ensure long-term project success.

Why Work With An Experienced Mine Rehabilitation Service Provider

Partnering with an experienced mine rehabilitation service provider ensures that the complex process of mine site rehabilitation is executed efficiently and effectively. With their expertise and commitment to environmental sustainability, they can help restore mining sites to a safe and sustainable condition.

A well-executed mine rehabilitation project is a great way to contribute to environmental sustainability and improve the local landscape. Working with an experienced service provider makes this process easier and more successful.

Our Successful Mine Rehabilitation Projects

Erizon is a leading provider of mine rehabilitation services known for its expertise in restoring and rehabilitating mining sites. Our team is highly experienced in the rehabilitation process, with an understanding of the best practices and safety protocols necessary to ensure successful project completion.

Our commitment to environmental sustainability has allowed us to help restore mining sites to their pre-mining state while also allowing new life to thrive in the area. Our rehabilitation specialists are well-versed in all aspects of the process, from selecting appropriate plant species for reclamation to monitoring for long-term success.

These are a few of our highly successful mine rehabilitation projects:

  • Kanmantoo Copper Mine Site Rehabilitation

Erizon was engaged by Hillgrove Resources in May 2018 to develop a revegetation strategy for the Kanmantoo Copper Mine site. The aim was to mitigate dust and stabilise soil in response to extreme weather conditions.

Erizon completed a 10-day project at Kanmantoo Copper Mine, involving hydromulching, rehabilitation, and batter stabilisation. Their purpose-built HydroRigs proved to be the most effective equipment for applying the hydromulching blanket solution. The project, covering a 40-hectare area, utilised a two-part application process to ensure favourable seed-to-soil contact and provide a protective moisture shield for the seed.

  • Rio Tinto Mine- Hail Creek Mine Site Rehabilitation

Erizon was approached by Rio Tinto to perform revegetation and soil stabilisation on 32.8 hectares of land at a prominent coal mine in Hail Creek, Central Queensland. Erizon proposed a framework aligned with Rio Tinto’s commitment to establishing a safe and sustainable area. Extensive soil analysis identified specific amendments needed for optimal vegetation growth.

3D multispectral drone mapping provided crucial land data like position, NDRI, and NDVI. Erizon utilises this information to tailor amelioration and fertiliser programs for enhanced vegetation growth. Mulch application was suggested to prevent erosion until natural substrate protection develops.
